Epos Beetle/Ipod interface  This was due to be presented to a large Uk store next month, suitable software having been rolled out.
The firm went bust. So did we.

That's a shame, eh?  I would really use something like this.  I wonder if it will ever happen.

In Time. Did you ever see the barcode readers toys, they were a flash in the pan but music delivery is quite persistent . keep up the good work.

Freddy

I never saw those.  But I did see something awhile back about a start-up that was looking to sell scanners to consumers to use at home for groceries.  I can't remember the name, though.

[this is good] The G1 phone (Google Phone) has a UPC reeader and goes out and compares prices on the internet. I am trying to decide between the G1 and the iPhone and That might make the difference in my purchase.

Freddy

[this is good] No kidding?  I have never heard that.  The possibilities would nearly be endless in terms of consumer and marketing apps.  Let me know what you decide.

The trouble in the Indy market though is many bands will release via an online seller that will give them a UPC number or equivalent., but then fail to register it with any details..so when scanned it just goes back to the online service with no details of the band etc.
I have also seen UPC issued  that are actually in the categories for packed meat and anothe for gloves.

Ken

I will let you know which one I go with. The problem with both is my location. I live in Wymoing and neither T-mobile or AT&T have a G3 network here so I would not get high speed internet. I am also  having trouble with Qwest which will be stopping cell phone service. They will let us out of out contract if we go to Verizon, but not any other carrier. I have had 3 different answers from three different service reps. One said yes and another said I would have to pay $200 per phone and we have 3 phones on the plan. We might have to wait until May to finish our contract. If anyone knows the real answer, please let me know. My son has the G1 and I tried the UPC and more than three quarters of the UPC's read fine. It also will give you a GPS location of where the closest location. Freddy,
I really like all the additions fo what you have in your first post. The G1 has a open architecture so people can write the software. The iPhone is not. My son is a programmer so I might ask him if he could rewrite that software to incorporate your ideas.

Freddy

[this is good] That's one of the biggest troubles for Indie artists in general, isn't it?  Instead of just making and playing music, they have to be business managers, booking agents, marketing experts, web programmers, graphic artists, PR gurus, distributors, copywriters, radio promoters, merchandising experts, bloggers, twittterers, myspacers, facebookers, voxers, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum...

And they have to give the music they make away for free.

What do musicians know about any of this?  Where does it leave time for creativity?  How is a musician supposed to know what to do with a UPC?

Freddy

[this is good] I live in Canada, so our choices for carriers and phones are even worse!  We get price fixing (really high) and old technology, coupled with a closed, protectionist telecom environment.  Not a great situation.
I'm glad you like the post.  That would be awesome if your son could write something that did the kinds of things I was talking about.  Isn't open architecture great?  Innovation and expression are in everyone's hands, and so things will move that much faster.  If he does, I definitely want to hear about it!
